Message from the President and Board Chairs

This year marked MidState Medical Center and The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s (HOCC) second year operating as the Central Region of Hartford HealthCare. We’ve grown stronger together over the last year. Becoming a unified region was vital to the future of our hospitals. As we continue to face a demanding healthcare environment and changing payment structure from our federal and state payers, our ability to adapt to these changes is much better now as a combined team.

The work that has been done over the last year to bring us together has been challenging. However, it has strengthened our position in the market as a high-performing healthcare provider and created new opportunities for growth. We have learned from each other, shared best practices and looked for ways to deliver care more efficiently and cost-effectively.

"It’s important that we care for people in our communities not just when they are sick, but along the entire continuum of their lives."

Our focus is aligned with where the future of our healthcare industry is moving – an emphasis on quality and safety through measures such as our hand hygiene initiative – and aiming our sights on the notion of population health management. It’s important that we care for people in our communities not just when they are sick, but along the entire continuum of their lives. This involves expanding access points to outpatient care and offering more services closer to home.

In this annual report, you’ll read about some of the exciting innovations and achievements that occurred at both MidState and HOCC this year. They include introducing breakthrough surgical technology for patients suffering from knee and hip pain, opening the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, regionalizing our inpatient behavioral health services with a new, state-of-the-art psychiatry unit, renovating our Cardiology suite at HOCC, and bringing LIFE STAR to MidState.

We hope you enjoy this report, and feel as much pride for our accomplishments this year as we do.
