Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S.; and stroke isn’t far behind. These are conditions that can be managed and in some cases prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and education. Hartford HealthCare Cardiology, the practice that serves Backus cardiac patients, moved to a regional model in 2015 adding providers to its growing Norwich practice and in the hospital. While patients with more advanced needs like transplant and bypass surgery are seamlessly connected to Hartford Hospital, Backus is working to keep more care in the community.

The hospital now offers an electrophysiology (study of the heart’s rhythm) clinic with full time cardiologists and an APRN on-site to care for patients with implanted cardiac devices. And in 2015, the hospital submitted a certificate of need to the state Office of Healthcare Access to begin offering emergency and elective angioplasty. The hospital has committed $4.98-million dollars in capital expenditures for the program.
