Helping New Mothers Deal with a Dark Secret

After giving birth to her second child, Heather (a Hartford Hospital employee) had a deep, dark secret.

She had thoughts about hurting herself and her new baby boy. She knew she needed help but didn’t know where to go. For a year, she and her husband struggled. Today, there’s help for post-partum depression at Hartford Hospital’s Institute of Living (IOL).

Heather helped establish the IOL’s Peripartum Mood Disorder Program, which was implemented with a grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and through collaboration among the IOL, Women’s Health at Hartford Hospital and OB/GYNs in the community.
